If your fare is only to Lima, then you also need passage to Cusco,

Bus

Bus travel from Lima to Cusco is available.  Transit time is 19-20 hours. Cost is $40-70 one way depending on the class of seat you purchase. It's adventurous, inexpensive, and you see a lot of country. Tradeoff is it can be tiring. If you're interested in trying the bus, consider breaking up the trip into two days, so you have a good rest along the way.

Flights - about 70 minutes

Lima airport code - LIM
Cusco airport code - CUZ
The dates of the Sacred Valley tour = Aug. 23-30, Machu Picchu optional extension = Sept 1-2

Taca Airlines
http://www.taca.com
I just found flights on Taca, round trip, in August, 2010 at  $168.00 including taxes.
Taca only flies in the morning.  Book soon, Taca  flies to Lima to Cusco just a few times a day and they sell out of seats. Book the latest morning flight you can. If your flight from the US is late and you miss an early Taca flight you probably won't be able to transfer to a later Taca flight that day because they sell out. Hence, book a later flight to allow plenty of time in case your flight from America is delayed.

I also recommend travel insurance if you book a Taca flight.  Then if you miss your flight, the insurance company will reimburse you should you need to purchase a ticket on another airline with same day travel.  I have purchased travel insurance from Travel Guard and needed it due to a missed Taca flight.

LAN Airlines

Lan has many, many daily flights from Lima to Cusco.  To book a flight on LAN from the US expect to pay $500 or more round trip.  You can purchase a ticket at the airport once you get to Lima, at lower fares.

No travel insurance is needed if you chose the option to purchase your Lan ticket in the Lima airport since you don't risk missing flight that you previously purchased a ticket for.

In case you need to lodge in Lima.  Find some suggestions here.
